Humanly Possible

AI & HI: Equipped to Join Forces

We’re witnessing a profound shift in the future of the human experience. Through the conversations surrounding the recent AI tech boom, perceptions of what intelligence is—and the role we as humans have in it—are reshaping the narrative of what’s humanly possible. Beyond just making tasks easier, AI seems poised to take over entirely new categories of intelligence and will likely set new precipices for technological advancement and human achievement.

The question is, where do we as humans fit in when the skills of higher reasoning, logic, and sequential inquiry are no longer a tax on the human brain alone? What becomes of our cognitive abilities when AI assists or even takes over these domains? According to Peter Deng, Head of ChatGPT, during the above talk at SXSW, AI is meant to augment our experience and catalyze our curiosity, rather than replace it.

In education, this concept is already being tested. AI is breaking through language barriers and adapting to individual learning styles all while making education more inclusive. In the above Ted Talk, Sal Khan of Khan Academy discusses the 2-Sigma problem that Benjamin Bloom first presented for the challenge between group learning and individual instruction. Namely, 1-1 instruction through the tutor model is far and away better at raising collective intelligence and summative achievement scores. But until now, our resources for this type of development have been limited. Khan illuminates how AI can truly unlock curiosity and empower accelerated learning on a 1-1 basis for each and every learner.

Curiously enough, even more potential lies in AI’s ability to decode human behavior and accelerate our knowledge of each other for better 1-1 and 1-many interactions. The integration of AI, combined with psychometric tools, holds immense promise for deepening our understanding of each other. Imagine a world where every interaction can be instantly informed by insights into differing personalities, communication styles, and emotional states. Prism® data already helps us understand ourselves and others better, paving the way for more empathetic and effective communications and collaborations. The advent of AI paves the way toward in-the-flow-of-life prescriptive actions to meet the ever-evolving demands of contextually complex human interactions—the results of which could be extraordinary.

As AI evolves, so must we. It’s an opportunity to redefine our humanity to one another and forge deeper connections. The lesson we’ll learn, as Stephen Hawking once advised, will assuredly be that we must keep talking.

As we embrace AI, let’s remember its power lies not just in its technology, but in how it can enhance our understanding of what it means to be human. By leveraging AI’s capabilities, we can unlock new levels of empathy, creativity, and collaboration, ensuring that the human experience continues to evolve.

“..Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.”
– Stephen Hawking
